第一根铁杆、第一根金属木杆、第一根钢杆球杆、第一根签名球杆……纽约苏富比即将在9月份拍卖世界上最古老、最稀有、最怪异的古董球杆。
9月份,纽约苏富比将迎来一场别样的高尔夫球杆拍卖会。届时,世界上最古老、最稀有、最怪异的600多根古董球杆都将展现在世人面前,每一根估价在 200美元到30万美元不等,而预计总成交额将要超过400万美元,被誉为"史上最为包罗万象的古董高尔夫球杆拍卖"。所有拍品将于9月20日到26日免 费对外预展,并在27日、28日拍卖。
此次拍卖的球杆都来自于一位叫杰弗瑞·埃利斯(Jeffery B. Ellis)的高尔夫球杆收藏家。自从1974年埃利斯先生买下第一根古董高尔夫球杆后,他就对球杆设计的演变深深着迷。过去三十年,他周游全世界,遍寻最有创意、最有历史意义的球杆,至今已经积累了近800根,藏品几乎涵盖了高尔夫球杆制造的各个历史时期。
最早的球杆
埃利斯的收藏当中包含着许多"第一":第一根铁杆、第一根金属木杆、第一根钢杆球杆等。其中最重要的是两根最早的铁杆,一根17世纪的方头轻铁杆(估 价25万美元)和一根18世纪的方头重铁杆(估价20万美元)。其中前者属于第一代高尔夫球杆,专用于沙地和碎石滩。目前世界上只留有少数17到19世纪 的铁杆,多为私人所收藏。
另一个"第一"则是高尔夫球史上的第一根金属木杆。埃利斯藏有1930年以前几乎所有球杆匠所制的代表作。这根球杆由一位印度橡胶生产商威廉·柯里(William Currie)在1891年于爱丁堡设计并申请专利,并且取名为"柯里金属木杆"(估价4万美元)。"柯里杆"的制作工艺比同等球杆早了一个世纪,作为目前仅存的唯一一根"柯里杆",此件拍品当然价格不菲。
相比之下,参加此次拍卖的1896年的美国第一根金属木杆在价格上就逊色了许多(估价8000美元),但它却有另一个特别之处:它的球头背面藏有一个 螺丝,只要稍稍拧转螺丝就能调节金属头木面背后的弹簧,从而控制击球的力度。其他有趣的拍品还包括"汤普森和米切尔金属木杆"(估价1.5万美元),它的 铝制中空球头的28个孔中填满黑色的古塔橡胶;而可以更换球头填充物以控制发球高度的"凯利发球杆"(估价2.5万美元)则比"汤普森木杆"更上一层楼。 虽然这些球杆只在高尔夫球杆史上昙花一现,但它们却为后来球杆迈向金属化的发展奠定了基础。
在19世纪末、20世纪初,球杆制造者发现了能使球杆更具耐久性和稳定性的新材料--钢,一小部分球杆匠开始试着制造钢制球杆。但这段时期的"实验 品"都是小批量生产,因此能够留存至今的非常难得。此次拍卖中就有一根已知最古老的钢杆球杆--制作于1881年左右的"汤姆·莫里斯开球杆"(Tom Morris Play Club,估价3万美元)。20世纪20年代罗伯特·考德利(Robert Cowdery)制造的"呼啸铁杆"(Whistler Iron,估价2.5万美元)则是唯一使用一整块钢制作的球杆。
球星签名球杆
早期的高尔夫球杆都以长长的木球头为特色,后来这种球杆被称为"长鼻杆"。"长鼻杆"在18世纪晚期发展到了巅峰,制作球杆的工匠们也开始在他们的作品上打标记。于是那些本身就是高尔夫球星的工匠,自然为他们的球杆增色不少。
比如在19世纪中叶的英国高尔夫公开赛上四次夺冠的威利·帕克爵士(Willie Park)所制造的一根"长鼻推杆"(估价1万美元)和一根"长鼻木杆"(估价1.5万美元)就在此次拍卖名单之中。另外还有汤姆·莫里斯(Tom Morris)的三件作品。莫里斯和帕克爵士一样,也是那个年代最受尊敬和爱戴的高尔夫球选手之一,莫里斯曾在第一届英国公开赛上以两杆惜败于帕克,但在后来的六年中同样连获四次冠军。
不过开创"标记"之风的工匠却并不是位球星。在此次苏富比拍卖会上,最大的亮点就是一根标志着"签名球杆"开端的"长鼻推杆"(估价30万美元),它是一位叫做安德鲁·迪克逊(Andrew Dickson)的工匠所制作的。安德鲁不是球星、也不是名人,而是史料记载中最早的高尔夫球童。1750年左右,安德鲁为一位叫詹姆斯·马科尔(James McCaul)的人制作了这根"长鼻推杆",并突发奇想地刻上了自己和詹姆斯的名字。谁会料到,此举竟然将这只球杆送入了150年后的格拉斯哥万国博览会。当它在250多年后的今天登上苏富比的拍卖台时,已经成为全场估价最高的稀世珍宝了。
